Inspiring a passion and maintaining the fun with children’s horse desk
The world of children’s toys, character furniture, and child psychology has a special aesthetic when designing furniture for younger clientele. There is a delicate balance between magic and practicality. In this case, the task was to create a functional educational piece that would also pique the interest of a young child fascinated by horses.
The leading contender was a bedroom desk.
Research and Inspiration
How can an educational piece of furniture also have the anatomical traits of a horse?
After many visits to the stables, desktop research, and baseline sketching, a unique form started to emerge:
A form composed of many two-dimensional body parts that assemble together to form a 3-dimensional whole.
Letting your inner-child’s imagination run riot (within guidelines) was a pleasure.
Providing functionality with a playful aesthetic was always driving design decisions.
Built-in storage to handle laptops and pencil cases became a must have. All guided towards a horizontal flat horse back and some sort of feature headpiece whilst a colour palette was in development.
Planning
Black, white and greys are the standard horse palette.
Colour decisions became organic as this child regularly rode a grey. Adding a character colour will inspire children and build emotions with your product.

Bring the design to life
After numerous revisions, the 3D model had reached its pinnacle, and it was time to bring it to fruition. Further refinement came from standardising the available wood sizes, incorporating minor cable management design details, and giving it a fresh coat of paint. The project was now primed for completion.
From full size drawing to achieving that perfect finish; it was crucial that the overall end goal of achieving an anatomical form, was preserved.
Stability, durability and fun
With no sharp edges and absolutely stability, ergonomics need to be comfortable with careful consideration of height and size. Durability also plays a key part , so material, construction and finish were all considered to withstand the daily wear and tear of being used by children.
Clearly, for animal furniture the design needs to tune the ‘fun’ volume up to the max. Engaging use of colours and playful forms allows the piece to be as interactive as possible to stimulate young imaginations.
