The growth of attic conversions
We are living through a big city movement towards sustainability, towards insulation (sound and temperature) and towards multi-use.
Clever architecture can tick many boxes; home office, storage and technology are merging to create compact living retreat that offer that boutique style. Quality oak, feature tiling and mood lighting all combine to create a harmonious value-add space fit for purpose.

Problem Solving and Problem Solutions
With space at a premium in any city, using your (financial) creativity to add value to your property makes sense. A significant return on investment, especially considering the relatively low conversion costs is absolutely in-scope.
This alone is enough motivation, but really visualising your own space adds gravitas to both your planning application (if needed.) and your vision. Loft Conversions are considered permitted development but always wise to check with your local authority.
Planning
Down-Selecting
With the Planning Application now in hand, which is a major milestone in the design process, start planning different options for the flooring: carpets, wooden floors, and/or tiles.
Is there an option to include glass balustrades to give that illusion of more light and what about fitted shelving above furniture as a space saving mechanism?
Get creative with materials
Maximise functionality
You may also need to consider retaining existing attic space for long(er)-term storage. Providing provisioning to access this space and digging deep to even ask if storage is the eventual end game are key considerations
Feature pieces
If you don’t have a specific interior design style in mind, now is the time to start planning bespoke furniture installations or off-the-shelf bathroom accessories – where are you looking to make a creative statement and where not?
Start Solid
Forming the backbone of this build was ensuring the structural integrity and the quality of insulation (thermally and acoustically) of the underlining joists were 100% before second phase.
It’s common in attic conversions for over a certain age for standards not to match today’s building regulations – this was rectified from the day one.
Avoid expensive re-work
Align your to-do checklist
Before instructing any construction or building teams it is crucial for plans to be agreed and signed-off as alterations post start date, will prove to be prohibitively expensive.
Brickwork, preparation and deliveries must be top of your early stage checklist.
Create
Build the Vision
The creative process differs for everyone but it is essential to grasp the concept of First and Second Fix.
Start creating your utopian space from day one by planning in your hot and cold water spurs, by ensuring your home office zone has sufficient electrical sockets and ensuring those principal pieces are delivered well in advance.
With these key items in place you have the creative building blocks to start designing your space and providing your building team with no blockers. A living document which includes 3D visualisations, mood boards and potential materials (with measurement) is a good way of solidifying a vision
